When To Use Multiple-Choice Tests

There are several forms of evalution out there to choose from. How does one decide what type of question to use and when?
The obvious answer is that it depends on the skill you're testing

• --> obviously do not use multiple choice to test creative writing

• --> don't ask student to write an essay to find out if they can identify the capital of Canada
  
  
• --Evaluation should always match as closely as possible the actual activity you're teaching
  
  
  • -teaching oral French, should give oral tests
    
    
  • -if testing ability to write in French, better give essay
    
    
    --> "write a letter to the grocer"
  
  
  -but if testing reading, best way to see if they have understood what they have read may be multiple choice, true/false, or short answer question
