Distributed some useful overheads showing how to use spread sheet to analyze school results compared to provincial results note with examples, first cut suggests that there was a problem in 1992/93, lower achievement than the province -but is difference significant? at 17 students, no, may just be random variation in students; but at 250 students maybe signficant -may be explainable...any teacher in school remembers that as class from hell; or may be year one Eng teacher away, or year new teacher joined staff, etc. may just be statistical anomally -- don't conclude from one year but second cut at data reveals 92/93 not a big difference, but problem with 94/95. Difference is here calcuated % not just of those in Eng 30 reaching acceptable level, but all those in Grade 12 --> 92/93 may be low because trying to get more kids to an acceptable standard, where as 94/95 using pump up volume trick of excluding anyone not likely to pass! but again, explanation may be obvious to anyone in the school, eg., school took on IOP program, has large influx of non-academic students we did not expect to register point of any analysis is to start discussion in staff room, to reflect -->NOT to witch hunt!
